DIY Dyed Feather Art

Remember when we all fell head over heels with this sweet nursery? It’s definitely worth taking a second peek at, because Jess tucked away darling details in every nook and cranny of her son’s precious bedroom, and this DIY feather art definitely might be one of my favorites. It’s perfect for any room, really, making it fall nicely into the “must craft” category. (See the other DIYs here, here and here).

Materials
White feathers
Liquid fabric dye in teal and navy
Plastic bin
Paper towels
18k gold marker
Glue dots
Watercolor paper
White picture frame

instructions
step-1 Lay down some cardboard or a trash bag on your workspace, and put on latex gloves.

step-2 Fill the plastic bin with warm water. Add spoonful or so of teal dye and mix thoroughly.

step-3 Dip the feather into the bin so that the dye comes up about 2/3 of the way. Let it soak for several seconds to a minute until you see the lightest color you’d like to see on the feather. Remove the case from the dye and set aside.

step-4 Add several more spoonfuls of dye and stir to make your next shade. Dip the feather in, slightly lower than before.

step-5Pour out half the bin of dye, then add in a pinch or two of navy dye and stir thoroughly. Dip the very tip of the feather in, then remove and lay flat to dry 1 hour.

step-6 Dot the feather with the 18k gold marker and let dry.

step-7 Use a ruler to rip a piece of watercolor paper to be ½” smaller on all sides than the size of the picture frame. Center the watercolor paper over the mat and use glue dots to secure it in place.

step-8 Place glue dots on the back of each feather and press onto the watercolor paper. Place in the frame and hang!
