From Liz Lynch of MyDomaine… “For a young family in Los Angeles’s Hancock Park neighborhood, their four-bedroom home had plenty of space, but its original configuration left much to be desired when it came to their lifestyle. Enter designer Amy Sklar, who helped her clients transform their home into a soothing space perfect for their needs.” Click here for the full tour!

The Mediterranean-style dwelling is home to a professional couple and their two children. For the design of the home, the clients wanted a fresh space to raise their children. Inspired by the home’s classic bones, Sklar set out to create a soothing, updated design that the family could grow into over time.
In the living room, the original beamed ceiling contrasts with the new, streamlined limestone fireplace.

Sklar created dynamic compositions in each of the home’s spaces by curating a mix of shapes, styles, and textures. “Paying attention to the ‘visual weight’ of furniture and objects (scale, texture, and tone) really helps to balance a space,” the designer tells us. “For example, upholstered head chairs at a dining table look great with ‘leggier’ side chairs.”

The client’s worked with Bestor Architecture to create a massive open space between the kitchen, breakfast nook, and family room by removing walls. Sklar cites this new configuration as the most dramatic change of the entire redesign.

The open kitchen and adjacent sitting room allows the family to be together, even if they are engaged in a range of activities. “They really wanted a place to be able to spend time together as a family,” says Sklar. “The open plan allows for them to be together during mealtime, playtime, and lounging time.”

In the master bedroom, a luxurious velvet bed steals the scene. “A large master bedroom is great opportunity for a four-poster bed, as it creates a cozy and inviting refuge,” Sklar says. “The bed also helps to define the space, adding an architectural element as well. To balance the clean lines of the bed, we upholstered it in mohair velvet to soften the overall look.”

Striking wallpapers were used in both of the kids’ rooms to create fun and interesting atmospheres. “The client was wonderfully adventurous with the wall coverings, which gave us a great springboard for a lot of the fabrics and furnishing we chose,” the designer says.
