How to Share a Studio Apartment Without Driving Each Other Insane

Living with someone can prove to be challenging, but try living with someone in a small studio apartment. It's not exactly the easiest of tasks, nor is it an ideal situation for most.

At the very least you must be organized, clean and able to make compromises. Patience is another important trait that comes to mind when you think about sharing a small space. Here are a few ways to keep your sanity.

Get organized … seriously

You have to be very organized when you're sharing a small space with someone else. There's not enough room to have clutter and chaos. Both renters need to have designated spots for personal items and belongings.

When you're living alone, you're more likely to leave things all over the place and invite clutter in. But it's imperative to break these habits if you plan on sharing a studio apartment with someone.

Stay clean and set a schedule

When you live in a small space, one of the easiest ways to prevent yourself from going insane is to keep things clean. This is especially important if there are two people making double the mess.

Create a cleaning schedule to keep you and your roommate on task. This doesn't mean you have to deep clean every appliance and area of your apartment every day. But it's important to unload the dishwasher, fold clean clothes, clean up after yourself and handle little things before they become annoyances for you or your roommate.

Shop for apartment decor together

Don't buy something large for the small studio apartment without consulting your roommate first. When choosing furniture and apartment decor, go as a team and make mutual decisions so nobody's space feels invaded.

Remember, that big poster frame you thought would look great on the wall might be entirely overwhelming to your roommate, so it's important to make decorating your apartment a team task. This can be a fun bonding activity and make you both a little bit more excited about sharing the space.

Turn your studio apartment into a tiny treasure

Just because studio apartments are small doesn't mean they're not homey or inviting.

Little things such as brightening up the walls, creating dividers and decorating appropriately can make living in a studio apartment with someone a little more enjoyable – and keep your sanity in check.
