Making a cross-country move is intimidating. Even a move down the block can be stressful. But having the right materials can help relieve some of that stress.
In the months leading up to a big move, you'll probably think of countless items you'll need to make the move easy. But, when the time comes, it's easy to be scatterbrained with so much going on.
We've put together a list of everything you'll need to pull off even the most daunting cross-country move.
1. Boxes and packing tape
This one is kind of a no-brainer, but they're absolutely necessary.
You never realize how many personal belongings you have until you try to consolidate and move them. Without boxes, those tasks would be completely unmanageable and take unpacking to whole other level.
As an added bonus, boxes can be found for free so you can collect and use as many as you need to make your move neat and organized.
2. Permanent markers
What good are boxes if you don't know what's inside them? When you're labeling your boxes, be detailed about its contents and use neat, large letters. This will help you know exactly where to put those boxes so you're not hauling them around your new place.
To truly have an organized move, gather as many permanent markers as you can find and maybe even pick up a few extra at your local office supply store. In the moment, you'll set these bad boys down and they'll never be seen again, so having a surplus will come in handy. Plus, they tend to become exhausted after a day of extensive use.
3. Moving blankets
Some of your larger items won't fit into a box. Things like dressers, bed frames and appliances will have to go on the moving truck as is. This can lead to damage, sometimes severe.
One easy way to minimize that damage is to use moving blankets. They're padded and large enough to wrap your large furniture and appliances in for extra protection.
If you don't want to invest in buying your own moving blankets, you can always rent them from the same place you rent your moving truck. And if you choose to use a moving company, they are sure to have their own supply to use.
4. A dolly or hand truck
While we're on the topic of protecting items while moving, let's talk about tools for moving those large, heavy items – a furniture dolly or a hand truck.
A furniture dolly is a wood or metal frame that lies parallel to the ground with four wheels on the bottom. Once you get your furniture or appliances onto the dolly, simply secure it with straps and then wheel it wherever you need to go.
The hand truck is an upright tool with a metal plate to slide under the item. The hand truck uses leverage to tilt the item and then two wheels to move it easily. A good hand truck even makes it possible for someone to move large furniture like a refrigerator or dresser single handedly.
5. The finishing touches
Lastly, you'll need a few extras to bring the whole process together.
Accessories like bungee cords, tape and tie-down straps are all useful during a move. You'll likely even find yourself making adjustments during your journey as your belongings settle and shuffle in the truck.
Of course, there are any number of things you can use to make your move more organized and seamless. What you use will all depend on your needs and how much work you're willing to put in beforehand.
